Gameplay
Similar to earlier games in the MX vs. ATV series, gameplay in Reflex revolves around multiplayer racing (12-player), across a wide variety of off-road race event types. These events encompass everything from motocross, supercross, omnicross and others and also feature a high level of trick completion, judged with several parameters in mind. Vehicles used in the races run the gamut from specific MX bikes, and ATVS, to super buggies and trucks. Gameplay in the dirt-covered environments faced require skill and guts to master. Along with the new Rhythm Racing 2.0 physics engine, MX vs. ATV: Reflex helps players achieve in these areas with a new control scheme, Rider Reflex.

Rider Reflex
Build around dual stick controls, the Rider Reflex control scheme built into MX vs. ATV: Reflex is designed to revolutionize the way you race in several different ways. The first of these is by improving precision turning when you need it. With the left stick controlling the bike and the the right the direction that the rider leans, tighter and faster turns are possible by jerking the two stick in the same direction, carving the player to a stop or changing direction in a instant, just as you would on a real bike. Similarly this ability to use the rider's weight, also impacts more subtle abilities to control a bike, both on the ground and in the air as the rider uses his weight to slow, or speed up his momentum at crucial times and change the angle of his bike to correct a bad takeoff But Rider Reflex is not just about steering. It also has a major role to play while while you are in the air, allowing players to pull off tricks like never before. There are several tricks and freestyle variations possible, all of which will take some time to discover and master, but the basic trick performance mechanism is simple. To pull off a trick just hold down the left bumper and indicate direction on the right stick. Players can hold the stick in the final position to hold the trick longer. The tougher the move, the more movement is required of the stick. Tricks can also be combined for extra style.

Wreck Avoidance System
No matter how sick attempted tricks might seem, they aren't worth much if you can't stick the landing. With this in mind MX vs. ATV: Reflex helps to get you back on the ground, safe and sound with a wreck avoidance system. In the event that players can't manage to use the Rider Reflex control system to right themselves as they come back to earth, this automatic system provides a last chance to avoid the disaster by alerting you to your danger with an onscreen arrow as the ground rises to meet you. Players must quickly flick the right stick in the direct of the arrow for the rider to regain his balance and keep on going. But expect to be challenged. If you are too slow you will wreck, and the harder the impact the less time you have to react.

Terrain
Featuring a new terrain engine, MX vs. ATV: Reflex provides unprecedented terrain deformation that create ever-changing courses as off-road vehicles carve lines and deep ruts that have a real-time impact on gameplay and remain persistent through the full length of each race.

Ride With Your Favorite Motocross Stars
More than just a game, MX Vs ATV: Reflex allows players to share the track and race against their favorite top athletes in professional motocross and supercross. Just a few of the top riders that players can expect to cross paths with include, James Stewart, Ricky Carmichael, Jeremy McGrath, Josh Grant, Ryan Villopoto and many more.

4 out of 5 stars A-W-E-S-O-M-E Video Game   July 10, 2010

I bought this video game as a gift for my grandson and i'm glad i did because he and his friends really love it.

4 out of 5 stars Great MX Game   June 22, 2010
K. Hawkins (Austin, TX United States)
Overall, this is a great game. The riding dynamics are nice, and the whips and scrubs never get old. From the motorcycle feel, I'd say this is the best in the MX vs. ATV series. I'm still not a fan of the Waypoint, Freeride and non-motorcycle parts of the game, but guess they are trying to hit a larger audience.

I do wish they had a 'career' option for the true MX fans. One where you could start as an amateur and work your way up to the big leagues. Then race a full MX and SX series, where points are tallied for the whole series, and not just a single race. But maybe I'm dreaming. :)

If it had the career option above, this would definitely get 5 stars from me. My only other complaint is that the soundtrack is a little on the heavy side, without many options. No complaints about the graphics, however.

To sum it up, if you're a racing fan (doesn't matter which kind), you won't be disappointed with this game.

4 out of 5 stars It's fun, but there's not much else.   March 30, 2010

I started playing rainbow studios games since Motocross Madness and then Motocross Madness 2. I feel after that it kind of went down hill. I had high hopes for Reflex and I was happy with what I got. The controls are great and the dynamic terrain is really cool. I haven't really played the other vehicles so I couldn't say how those worked. I enjoy free riding more and this game doesn't really deliver like the first two did.

Overall though, if you are a fan of these types of games, I'd say it's definitely a buy. Or at least a rental.

2 out of 5 stars The basics are there, but the staying power is not   March 24, 2010

When I first popped this game in, I was amazed and played for several hours at a stretch. I was happily carving around on my tricked-out KTM, enjoying the races and jumps, free-rides, and everything else.

After a couple of days, you begin to see there's not a lot there. There aren't many tracks. There's no semblance of an official racing series or a real "career" mode.

Only KTM bikes have been licensed for the game. There are other bikes bearing the distinctive color schemes of other manufacturers, but they have made-up names.

The customization and tuning of the bikes is very simplistic. You simply tune the bike on a sliding scale between hard/soft suspension, acceleration/top speed, soft/sticky tires. The custom parts you can buy mean little - they all have the same values and do the same things, except for the look.

To complete the game you are forced to use buggies, sport trucks, etc. The choices for these vehicles are very limited and these events are uninteresting. Like most people I was only interested in the MX aspect of the game.

Another major annoyance is the frequency with which the computer riders will crash into you and knock you down. It happens far too often that you'll just be running your race and a computer rider comes from nowhere and crashes into you at speed that would cause very serious injury. Due to the lack of realism, you can still win the race often times even with a few crashes.

Next time: give us meaningful customization and tuning, make the rear tire look like it actually spins when you ride, and give us a meaningful career mode instead of the glorified string of single races.

I'd give this one 2 stars out of 5. If you play the demo, you've essentially played the whole game.

2 out of 5 stars So disappointing   March 22, 2010

I have been playing this particular MX series since the first MX Unleashed and have loved it. I was so excited for this game that I didn't even bother renting it before buying..boy was I wrong to do that. I myself also ride and have always enjoyed the previous games but this one was sooo not what I thought it would be. I had very high expectations for this game. Played the demo and thought it would be pretty good. The new engine with the "Rider Reflex" seemed interesting and something new. But clearly they did not do enough testing before release. The physics and realism is HORRIBLE! Its a step in the right direction, but so poorly done.

For one, while controlling the rider and the bike separately is a good idea, its much to sensitive and unforgiving. You fly off the track, skid out, and bounce around so easily that you cannot keep your bike under control. Yes yes, I know, you are probably saying "You noob, stop using the Reflex so much and you'll be fine!". Well I tried that and still, it is just plain garbage. And the AI....the worst I have seen from this series. Other riders constantly run you off the track, T-bone you in corners, land on your head, and screw up so badly that you cant help but plow into them, crashing yourself as they just ride away unscathed.

Using Reflex to save a fall was an interesting concept except for the fact that it does not work realistically at all. When you fail to preform it, you basically either fall to the ground through your bike, glitch from being on your bike, to the side of it on the ground, or just straight up. It is anything but realistic. It is just corny and stupid looking.

The choice of gear and accessories is modest, but always could be better. A couple manufacturers only have a few colors to choose from (Shift). Which is just pathetic. And the only bike manufacturer available...KTM...no Kawasaki, no Suzuki, no Honda, not even Yamaha...What the hell is up with that? There is no legitimate excuse for that at all! I want to ride the real manufacturer, not some stupid bike they come up with a name for, paint it green and try to pass it off as a Kawasaki. And PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE!! Get rid of the other vehicles! Just make it MX, ATV, and Supermoto. That would be perfect. If you want to play with other vehicles, go play Dirt. They can actually do it correctly anyway. The other vehicles in this game are a complete joke and are not fun in the least.

Sound..well it was good in the other games. And the music you actually got to pick which songs did and did not play. Thats gone, and the music that does play is just terrible. Doing tricks? Well forget about having fun with that, the way it is set up is just ridiculous. Memorize 3 directions to move the stick for each trick and hope that the one you try to preform, actually works. Great idea!

So, with all the crap aside. Everything else is fine. This game had great potential, but instead of polishing up what matters and spending to much time on what sucks. Guess what you have? MX vs ATV Reflex!
